Hiking Gear Guide: Everything You Need in One Place
Hiking is by far one of my favorite pastimes. I’m fortunate enough to live in a place where good hiking trails are ten minutes away! When you prepare for a hike, you need to ensure you have all the hiking gear you could need. It is never ideal to be halfway up a mountain and realize you forgot a necessary item.
Whether you are hiking in snow or in the summer heat, there are certain, essential pieces of gear you will need. Among the most common items across the board are backpacks, hiking boots, hiking attire, a jacket, and a water bottle. However, depending on the type of hike, extremely rugged, or an easy trail, you may need additional gear.
Backpacks
Backpacks are essential on a hike. After all, they are the most convenient way to carry everything you need. I have used many different types of bags on hikes, and it all depends on how far I intend to go. For a longer hike that takes up the majority of the day, I prefer a tactical backpack with numerous compartments. The Red Rock Outdoor Gear Sidekick Tactical Sling Bag is a good option for shorter hikes. However, I also consider the weight of the bag. It has plenty of pockets and is comfortable to carry. Another great option is the 5.11 Tactical 56180 2-Banger 3L EDC Bag. It is equipped with plenty of pockets and is even waterproof.
Though there are items you need to take with you, you must think about the weight you are carrying as well. For a longer hike, a larger backpack that is still ergonomic is the best choice. When I go on a longer hike, I always ensure I have a few extra items of food, water, a spare jacket, a flashlight, etc. A backpack such as the Condor Compact Modular Style Assault Pack is a type of bag that has a convenient compartment for every accessory needed for an outdoor excursion. I prefer bags that have designated places for firearms, magazines, little items, and larger items. When a bag has all of these features, it is far easier to keep everything organized.
Boots
Footwear is extremely important to consider when hiking. After all, your feet are your most valuable asset on a hiking trail. Boots that cover your every need are essential and can make a difference in your day. The hiking boot or tactical boot you choose may depend on the trail you are hiking as well as the time of year. For example, during the colder months, a boot with a rugged tread would be ideal in the event a trail has snow or mud. In addition, during the winter months, a boot with an isolated lining is great for hiking in frigid temperatures. Also, a high-top boot is best for trails that have tall grass or for colder terrain. The LAPG Terrain Mid or Low Hiking Boot is one of my go-to pairs of boots. They are comfortable and provide solid foot support. The tread is also durable and rugged which is great for just about any hiking trail.
The height of a tactical boot may also depend on your preference. I prefer a mid boot but there are circumstances when a high-top or low-top boot is more suitable. Before selecting a boot take into consideration where you and when you are will be wearing the footwear. These facts will help you determine the best type of boot for your needs
Attire
Hiking clothes just like other accessories will depend on the type of trail, how long the trail is, and the weather. My preference as far as hiking shirts is always something light that I can layer other clothes with and long sleeves. The LA Police Gear Tactical Operator Polo is a good choice for recreational activities.
When I choose a hiking shirt I look for one that is made well and won’t easily rip but is also breathable. A waterproof shirt is even better since you never know what type of weather you may encounter in the mountains.
The same principle goes for selecting hiking pants. I also look for a pair that allows me to be mobile and has several pockets. Since I used to be a crime scene investigator I have a whole wardrobe of tactical pants that I know use for hiking or shooting. My work pants have now become my recreational wardrobe. My favorite hiking pants have zippered side pockets which are a positive feature especially for hiking. This way I don’t have to worry about anything falling out of my pockets. They are also waterproof which is a major plus since I usually hike in terrain where the weather can change in a few minutes.
Additional Accessories
Choosing additional accessories for your hiking trip is dependent on what you prefer to take with you. For instance, I like to ensure I have everything I could need from a First Aid kit to a flashlight and even a backup battery pack. LA Police Gear has a wide selection of hiking accessories including tourniquet sets and First Aid kits. Another good accessory to keep with you is an extra hydration pack. Hydration packs come in numerous sizes too. Another one of the best gadgets I have come across is a portable water filter that can easily fit into a hiking bag.
Putting Your Gear Together
When you put your hiking gear together make sure you have everything you need most efficiently and compactly possible. As previously mentioned, it is best to ensure you have everything you need without compromising comfort. With the right hiking gear, you can be both prepared and comfortable. Spending time outside and hiking a scenic or challenging trail is a great outlet. With the right gear, you can enjoy every minute of your outdoor adventure.
