Decades ago, tactical gear for women didn’t exist because women were home taking care of the family while the men worked. But as women started working outside the house in jobs that were previously for men only, the need for great tactical gear for women grew.
Often women were forced to wear men’s uniform sizes in law enforcement, the military and other similar male-dominated jobs. Clearly, men’s uniforms didn’t fit very well. Women needed clothing they could rely on when they needed to chase suspects down, escort an inmate to court or fight a blazing fire.
Thankfully, we’ve come a long way since then, and now there are more choices for women than ever before–such as comfortable women’s tactical boots, cargo pants and more. Here’s how to find the best tactical clothing and gear for women.
Tactical Clothing and Gear for Women in Law Enforcement
Women who wear a uniform for a living often have the hardest time finding uniforms and gear that fit. Unfortunately, your agency will issue most of your clothing. However, you do have some leeway with boots, undergarments, accessories, tactical pants and shirts for training, range days and other special assignments. Here are some tips for finding the right clothing for women.
Tactical Pants for Women
Women in law enforcement or other similar careers need pants that are durable and won’t rip. Any clothing too restricting can limit movement, so you want lightweight, durable pants with some of the following features:
- Extra pockets to hold tools and gear
- Ripstop fabric to prevent tears and rips
- Stretchy, comfortable waistbands
- Reinforced cargo, back and front pockets
- Reinforced knees and crotch
The key is you want pants specifically made for women. Look for tactical pants with a mid-rise waist so the waistband doesn’t interfere with your holster and drawing your weapon.

Tactical Shirts for Women
It’s hard for women to wear men’s shirts because the tails and sleeves are too long, and the armpits hang down low on your sides. Women in physically demanding careers don’t need their shirts to look cute. They need to be comfortable and handle anything. Like the tactical pants, you don’t want them to restrict movement. Here are some features to look for when choosing a woman’s tactical shirt:
- Reinforced elbows
- Knit underarm gussets
- Sleeve and chest pockets
- Water-resistant finish
- Abrasive and rip-resistant at stress points
Shirts may not have all these features, but these are some you want to look for–depending on your job.
Tactical Belt
Your agency will issue a duty belt, so you won’t have much choice in that, but the under belt you choose is critical. It holds up your duty belt for long periods of time, so it must be sturdy and comfortable. The under belt needs to hold up the duty belt and all the heavy equipment on it. Choose a belt that fits comfortably and isn’t too loose.
Women’s Tactical Boots
A reliable, comfortable pair of boots is one of the most important parts of your uniform. You want your boots to be durable so they last a long time and feel good on your feet for 12-hour shifts. Here are some features to look for in a good pair of women’s tactical boots:
- Puncture and tear-resistant
- Side zippers
- Nylon and leather uppers
- Waterproof - GORTEX
- Slip-resistant
- Reinforced eyelets
- Crush-proof shanks
- Durable soles
- Moisture-wicking liners
A good pair of tactical boots keep your feet warm and dry in the worst weather, aren’t too heavy and enhance your speed and agility.
Other Tactical Gear and Equipment
There are things that may not be issued to you that are essential pieces of equipment. For instance, if you work patrol and not in the jail, many officers carry a tactical knife. You may also want to carry an IFAK or Individual First Aid Kit if your agency doesn’t issue you one.
A good pair of tactical gloves helps ensure that you don’t get pricked by a needle during a vehicle search. You’ll also want to purchase undershirts that help keep you warm in winter and cool in the fall. Over time, you’ll learn what types of clothing and accessories you need as a female law enforcement officer, whether you work on the street or in the jail.
