If you don’t own a pair of these, you should!

A little history-During my 34 years in LE I wore a standard police uniform for 17 years. The other 17 years I wore a utility or BDU type uniform daily. Also, early on in my career I started to compete in shooting competition and back then jeans/Levi’s were the common pants worn. Along came a company call Royal Robbins (actual owners name) that sold pants designed for outdoor mountaineering. The company was sold in 2002 then sold back soon after to Mr. Robbins without the “5.11” tactical pant line. The 5.11 brand soon moved forward to become a major brand in the LE and military community. They have continued to design great tactical pants (and other gear) but with one major negative issue, 5.11 has priced their pants just out of reach for most folks regardless of the tact-a-cool features.

Fortunately, LAPG has developed and been providing a line of tactical pants, with an assortment of practical features at a very affordable price! They have continued to evolve and significantly improve their products in the past/last 10 years. I have been a big fan of LAPG’s BDU and tactical line of pants for many years.

LAPG’s  Atlas Tactical Pants and Atlas Shorts are now my go-to tactical pants for so many reasons! The Atlas pant is loaded with features for range training, shooting competition and casual enough for everyday wear.

My range training kit differs from my shooting competition kit slightly because I need markers for the targets, a shot timer, a notebook, a whistle, a multi-tool and emergency first aid gear. The design of the Atlas pockets easily accommodates these items and provides efficient accessibility. For shooting competition, I use the small front thigh pocket for my “Make Ready” magazine and the left front or left rear pocket for my “Make Ready” rifle magazine. I can also dump a few shot shells in the cargo pockets for fast access with the Atlas zipper opening. If you’re shooting with gloves on, the cargo pocket zipper tabs make for easy access. The Atlas cargo pockets low profile design also keeps the shot shells from moving around as you move from one shooting position to another. If the competition event has stages that require groundwork, I pre-install the LAPG Knee Pads. I like the removable interior knee pad over an exterior knee pad for overall comfort and function. The LAPG interior knee pad is always in the right place at the right time with no adjustment needed.

The Atlas pant for casual wear checks all my boxes. The Atlas pant is low key in design and doesn’t stand out as a tactical pant with typical big hook/loop flap closure cargo pockets. The stealthy design blends its tactical features into the LAPG pants. The front pockets provide ideal concealment and easy access for my pocket carry pistol while the interior of cargo pockets contain a small pocket that accommodates my extra pistol magazine. If you carry IWB, the expandable Atlas waistband will accommodate most pistol sizes. If your IWB pistol is the size of the G21 girth, then you may want to go up one pant size.

Another outstanding feature of  LAPG’s Atlas Tactical Pant line that puts it over the top for me in comparison to other similar designed tactical brands is LAPG’s Stretch Tech System (STS)! This material is a game changer in terms of comfort both in movement and heat dispersion. I was skeptical initially that LAPG’s STS airy stretchy panels would wear fast or snag when seated but I haven’t had any issues. The STS placement on the Atlas pant is perfect to allow complete freedom of movement for any shooting position. I have seen garment material very similar to STS on other tactical pants that ran in the $200 and up range, again out the price range of most folks.

Final comment - Last year at a 3-gun competition at the Rio Salado Sportsman Club in Mesa Arizona there were 3 RSOs per stage. The majority of the RSOs were wearing the Atlas pant and wearing it year-round! If you are involved in any activity outdoors where the temperatures is in the mid-70s or higher, the Atlas will keep you and your junk much more comfortable. There is undoubtedly so much value in the Atlas pant. If you don’t own a pair, you should!
