CONCEALED VS. OPEN CARRY
First, you need to decide if you want a concealed carry holster or an open carry holster. The whole idea is to conceal your weapon, and some police holsters just don’t make that possible. You want a low-profile holster. The size of the weapon is another big factor because there is a limit to how much a concealed carry holster can hide.
There are IWB holsters and OWB holsters. IWB stands for inside the waistband, and OWB stands for outside the waistband. OWB holsters are better for revolvers or large semi-automatic firearms. The wide wings on this holster secure it on your belt and prevent it from printing on your coat or shirt. There are also shoulder, ankle, pocket, and belly band holsters.
For open carry holsters, your main choices are shoulder or belt holsters. There are several kinds of holsters for duty weapons, such as chest, shoulder, drop leg, or belt holsters.
HOLSTER MATERIALS
Leather is a traditional material that holsters are made from, and it’s popular even today. But it gets creased and soft over time, so some people prefer other materials, such as Kydex or synthetic materials.
RETENTION
Holsters usually are rated at one of four different levels, with level four using multiple retention methods combined with friction. There are four methods of retention: straps, trigger guard locks, flaps, and friction.
Level 1 – Only relies on friction
Level 2 – Uses friction and a second method
Level 3 – Has two retention methods plus friction
Level 4 – Uses three retention methods plus friction
